I do not have “visions” in centering prayer or meditation, at least not in the way is depicted in popular media. Instead, there are times as I pray that a very interesting image occurs to my imagination — something that just doesn’t seem to fit with my normal flow of memory, thoughts, and daydreams. I tend to call these moments “imaginings,” but that is just a convenient label for me. Let me give an example from my meditation journal…
“I felt one day that I should center with the prayer word ‘Return,’ which is not my usual prayer word. In using this word, I couldn’t help picturing sitting before a huge ball of crackling white energy. Then, I was inside the ball, and then I looked up and a huge ray of energy shot up toward heaven. At this point, I was filled with a sense of love, peace, wonder, and potential (though not necessarily my own potential).”
Still, all of this happened in my imagination — I did not “see” any of this in a visionary way. So, I may post some of these “imaginings” from time to time. The point here is that while I may indeed be crazy, I am a specific type of crazy that does not involve seeing visions. 🙂
