Variations on a Theme

It may come as no surprise to anyone who has browsed around this website that my two favorite spiritual practices are centering prayer and mindfulness meditation. While I use a variety of practices, these two speak to me personally in such a deep and resonant way. A significant reason that I like them is that they have so many options for practice (and I do love my options!).

So, if you’re in the mood to spice things up, try these variations:

(1) For centering prayer, try incorporating the sounds of nature (rushing wind, calling birds, waterfalls, etc.). You can find free recordings of these types of sounds all over the Internet, or – and I know this is a wild suggestion – you might try centering outside, provided you have a relatively secluded place to pray.

(2) For mindfulness, begin with a body scan, but tense each muscle group for one or two seconds before breathing deeply into that area. I’ll guarantee that it will be easier to concentrate on the sensations of that physical spot.

Now, what about you? Are there any variations on centering prayer or mindfulness meditation that you would like to share?

I’m all ears!

I love the brevity, humor, and depth of your words. I’d add three practices to the mix:
First, walking. I believe bodily motion, as well as stillness, can add greatly. The walking metaphor seems rather universal as a spiritual practice.
Second, envisioning. Since backpack days, I have loved picturing Jesus walking beside me. Native American spirituality does this by feeling the life walking with one–as you said, birds, wind, and I’d add music as one walks.
Third, visiting. The company of family and friends can be rich soil for spiritual gardens.
    Grace,
